(*) Heads up- Jamaica Marriages and Deaths- it is being pulled to add a new field- a certificate number field. I will post when they have the changes made.

Essex Parish Registers

Essex Parish Registers- the field helps for the bride and grooms names have been changed to state NOT to index street names. We will be changing the how to on the wiki and project updates.

Muster Rolls

Muster Rolls- if the soldiers are stationed on a ship type the complete ship name. As an example Essex and USS Essex are two very different places. An update will be added to the update page as soon as the examples can be found and posted..

Jamaica Deaths and Marriages

[7/23/2013 10:51:41 AM]
Jamaica Deaths and Marriages- there is an update on the wiki saying to mark the death field as blank if it is unreadable rather than using the registration date.  On part C the rules have changed and we would use the registration date if the death date is unreadable.  This could cause some interesting arbitration situations as what is unreadable to one, may not be to another.  We will do the best we can.  The update is going to be removed.

July 24, 2013

Philippines Batches

Philippines- when a register is cut into two segments, with the parent's name in one batch and the child's in another- index the information in the batch that you have-it will be combined later.

US, Mississippi—Military Grave Registrations, 1936–1951

US, Mississippi—Military Grave Registrations, 1936–1951,
New project release - it is a bit complex.  There are a multitude of different document types.  The principle is - if there is a name of a person index it and glean any additional information available.  So, names and no other info- index them.  READ the Project Instructions for information on what and what not to index.

March 14, 2013

Passenger List Projects and Batches

Indexers and Arbitrators:
During the earlier releases of the Passenger List batches the Field Helps and Project Instructions said to only index the passengers and not the crews, ship owners, etc...  In the later batches the Project Instructions were changed and we were asked  to index every name on the image except the names of companies and the relatives the passengers were staying with. PLEASE be careful and read the Project Instructions for the correct instructions for the batch you have downloaded. On the batches that only ask for the passengers please only index the passengers. On the batches that want all the names indexed please index every name on the image. Thank you.

Certificate numbers on projects

Indexers and Arbitrators we have received some new indexing informaiton; Certificate numbers on projects-- when they are listed on the document in this fashion 1-2345, index all numbers without the hyphen.  This will be the standard for every project.

A few questions, a few answers:
1. Ohio Births- indexes currently being downloaded which list names, dates and parents are to be indexed.

2. Maine WWI Draft Registrations: no birth place, but card says Native or Natural Born in Nationality field- do not index any information from the nationality field.  If there is no birthplace listed- don't index one.
Relation/Relationship field- if wife (or whatever) is written in the relative field- tab past both the relative and relationship field.  If wife (or whatever) is recorded in the relationship field, even if no names are recorded in the relative field index wife in the relationship field.

3. Residence- you may run across locales such an Unity Plantation.  Type what is on the document.

New York Passenger Lists:
Some batches contain one document that has information for 1 person.  There is only one image per batch.  The batches have a default of 10 records.  Please enter the info for the persons listed and mark blank the remaining lines.

Census Records

Indexers and Arbitrators:
On some census records the enumerators have entered a symbol that looks like an backward "c" and sometimes along with a small looking ditto mark. ( " ).  You will notice that it is written just before the surname.  We have been advised that the entries should be indexed and arbitrated as "Mc" such as in Irish names McXxxxxx.

 Passenger List Projects

California Death Records

California Death Records
It has been reported that the Age Field is causing trouble  when the batch is complete and is trying to be submited back to the server.  The problem has been corrected by the engineers but those of you who have downloaded a batch before the fix will still have problems submitting the batch.  The only way to submit these older batches is to click on the ACCEPT button for each record while in Quality Check and then submit. Sorry for the inconvience and effort. Thank you so much for your help.

Family Search Indexing Udate

  FSI Update
As you all know that Family Search Indexing has been experiencing some major problems for the last few days. New York 1865 Census

 New York 1865 State Census
When a line has no information on it and is skipped, please follow the numbering on the actual sheet.  Example, Line 4 Mary Smith, Line 5 Blank, Line 6 John Smith.  The line numbers would be indexed as 4 and then 6.  5 would be skipped.  I think this may be confusing so if you have questions let me know.

California Death Project

 California Deaths
Ages over 100- as the age unit column tells us that the person is at least 100 we are to add the 1 in front of the numbers that were recorded on the document.  As you have probably seen, the column only allows two digits.  So, if A is in the age unit field and 05 in the age column, index as 105

Immigration and Natturalization Community Project

Three new passenger list projects are starting today as part of the Immigration and Naturalization Community Project. They include new instructions regarding which names to index. We are now indexing the names of crew as well as passengers.
The three projects with new instructions are:
  • US (Community Project), Pennsylvania, Philadelphia—Passenger Lists, 1883–1945 [Part B]
  • US (Community Project), Florida, Tampa—Passenger Lists, 1898–1945 [Part B]
  • US (Community Project), Maryland—Passenger Lists, 1820–1891

California Death Project

We have received word from those overseeing the California Death project that all of the ZZ's in the given name field on the California Death Records Project are to be marked blank.

California Death Project

 California Deaths
If the person is 100 and up the program will not allow an A to be put in the Age Unit field.  Just mark that field blank.
Also in this project in the first column after the given name, the letter is the initial of the individual and should be indexed with the given name.

US, California—Death Index 1905-1939

Launched
US, California—Death Index 1905-1939 - This project can have over 400 records per image.  We are checking to see if it will slow people's computers to a crawl.
There is nothing that can be done as the images cannot be broken up.  We will hope for the best!
Indexers and Arbitrators, Ask a question has some real issues right now- the engineers are working on the problem, but havn't been given any real solutions. Not all subjects entered are affected, please watch your answers carefully. I will post another message when it is fixed.
